Message that is Missing (Lk.3:15-20)

“As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Lk.3:16)

The message of the Gospel is the message of repentance. It is a call to come to the Savior.

Message of Repentance exposes sin

When the Gospel is preached it will expose the sin in the lives of the listener. It will make him realize how wretched a sinner he is and how badly he needs the Savior. This often hurts because “… the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb.4:12).

Message of Repentance will invite reaction

The unrepentant will react violently to the preaching of the Gospel. They will oppose the message, attack the preacher and persecute him if it is within their power. Herod was offended by the way John exposed his immoral and wicked lifestyle and threw him in jail.

Message of Repentance will point to the Savior

The Gospel will not only pin point the listener’s sin but also point to the Savior. Without this the message is no ‘Good News’. It introduces Jesus as God’s solution – the perfect one and the only one. John introduced Jesus as God’s holy lamb that takes away our sins. He was willing to fade away into oblivion while bringing the spot light on the only Savior of the world. He was willing to diminish by letting Jesus have all the credit. He consciously denied any reference to his greatness unlike many great servants of God today.
